Helpful tips on what to buy for pepper spray.

by Jared Kelley Pepper Spray: When buying pepper spray the things that need to be looked at are the scoville heat units, percentage of pepper and oleoresin from capsicum plants. Remember mace is a name brand not a pepper spray. The product is as equal as any other name brand other than the components in it. Really not a good choice to buy for the reason 99% of mace brand pepper spray does not have oleoresin capsicum which is the leading ingredient that needs to be looked for when buying pepper spray. Pepper spray is a non-lethal chemical agent which is used in riot control, crowd control and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs. The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum genus, including chilies. Pepper spray is also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum") or OC gas.
When considering which pepper spray is most effective, one must consider the percentage of pepper being used and the heat rating of that pepper (measured in Scoville Heat Units or S.H.U.). Now most people hear all the time police strength from many different vendors when shopping around and notice from site to site that that there many different name brands along with different scoville heat units and percentages of pepper. The highest out there in scoville heat units is 5 million but only has 2% pepper in it. That is what most law enforcement use and is also considerably higher in price because most shoppers think they have the best since law enforcement use it. Not true at all.
What you will see here is two different name brands of pepper spray. Streetwise and Wildfire pepper spray that are the markets leading pepper spray. We have other brands like mace brand but mace does not compete with these two which is why we do not offer them anymore. Mace brand is mostly 10% pepper without O.C. in them and the retail prices are way to much for something less along with most does not know the heat units in them. If your asking what’s so important about the oleoresin capsicum. If you take someone who is wigged out on drugs or very intoxicated and/or has been through some type of chemical warfare in the military the pepper sprays with out O.C. might have very little affect if any at all on them.
The reason the oleoresin from the capsicum plant has been added was to over come any and all attackers to help assure your defense be greater. The leading seller is the streetwise by far and has been for quite sometime now. It has all the ingredients and equals the pepper spray law enforcement use. It has the oleoresin capsicum and 2 million scoville heat units along with 17% pepper. I understand the police strength has 5 million scoville units but also only has 2% pepper in it. That’s what makes it equal in the streetwise pepper spray is the 17% pepper. Now the wildfire has 3 million scoville units and has 18% pepper which makes this the leading brand amongst all pepper spray but the prices are quite a bit higher.
If your wanting the markets best it is the wildfire if your willing to pay the price for it. I find the prices are not worth it considering the streetwise are definitely strong enough to take down the biggest man. I know personally how strong the streetwise is and for the price compared to the wildfire is definitely the better buy. My thoughts on why they would make it hotter is to be better than the leading market for sales. Either choice you make between the two are great choices and you won’t be making a wrong one.
